Forest for Mongolia

Domogt

Domogt

Project name:                 Development of forests and gene pool of local forest tree ecotypes in Mongolia
Project Number:             MN-2015-044-RO-31210
Implementing Agency:    Institute of Forest Management
Supervisor/Coordinator:  Richard Slabý
Contact:                          richardslaby@seznam.cz
Implementation date:      2015-2017
Support provider:            Czech Development Agency

The Domogt project is a unique project for the implementation of Czech forestry know-how into Mongolian practice. Based on an invitation from Mongolia, ÚHÚL was entrusted by the Czech Development Agency to implement this project focusing on long-term forest development planning and forest reproductive material. These themes were directly linked to more specific implementation objectives, namely practical demonstrations of nursery management, education and awareness raising and public outreach.

The Domogt Forest Nursery was built as part of the project, which is a comprehensive complex of demonstrations of sustainable forest management. In addition to the nursery area itself, which includes, for example, nursery foil beds for growing seedlings or a seed orchard, the complex also includes an educational trail that guides visitors through demonstrations of charcoal burning, new forest planting and protection, as well as practical interventions to increase forest stability, natural regeneration and production. As a result, the entire site serves as a demonstration and training centre, the only one of its type and scale in Mongolia. In addition, the project has produced a number of instructional and educational videos during practical and theoretical training sessions, written monographs, developed a forest management plan for the land under Domogt Shariin Gol, and conducted a number of research studies that are being published over time.

  • Project Domogt - Workshops

During the implementation of the Domogt project (2015-2017), a number of forestry workshops were organized in which Czech experts participated. These were mainly FAO workshop in Sharyn Gol, FAO workshop in Ulaanbaatar and FRDC workshop in Sharyn Gol.

  • Project Domogt - Ulaanbaatar

During the implementation of the Domogt project (2015-2017), accompanying work activities were also continuously carried out in Ulaanbaatar.

  • Project Domogt - Darkhan

Although the Domogt project primarily targeted the forests around Sharyn Gol, forestry experts also worked closely with Darkhan University during the project implementation (2015-2017), where they helped to implement additional foil trees for seedling production.

  • Project Domogt - Research trips

During the implementation of the Domogt project (2015-2017), a number of research trips were undertaken within the forested areas of northern Mongolia to collect new data on the state of local forests. These sites included Bugant, Khövsgöl, Batchiret, Khonin Nuga, Tunkhel, Tujiin Nars, Gorkhi-Terelj and Udleg.

  • Project Domogt - Zulzaga

The Zulzaga area is located near Darkhan and enjoys great popularity as a holiday location with pine forests on the sands. During the course of the Domogt project (2015-2017), surveys and new plantings were carried out here to keep the sands stabilized by forest.

  • Project Domogt - Sharyn Gol

During the implementation of the Domogt project (2015-2017), a model of forest management, unparalleled in Mongolia, was built by Czech experts in the forests near Sharyn Gol.
